The things we cleaned !!!
Today we cleaned plastic proctor film off of vinyl window frames . The project was shutdown over the pandemic so the proctor was never pulled off , usually that is done with a 90 days of installation. Because the protector was left on there for so long ( 2 years ) The Sun has basically baked on the plastic film I tried a lot of different things to get this off. First I tried cleaners didn't work. Next I moved on to goof off Goo gone acetone etc they didn't work. Third I decided maybe I could use pressure so I tried pressure washing it off with fear that the The glass on the window would be busted This was impossible. So next I sit and thought about what I could try and it came to me when people remove wallpaper they use steam so maybe heats the answer I try to steamer and it didn't work so finally I figured it out I'm going to have to bake it back off. I bought a heat gun just a cheap one I heated little sections at a time and use the scraper and a metal scrubber to remove the remaining blue film once it was removed I applied cleaner to it and scrubbed it a little cleaner I use black vinyl repair to repair any scratches on it and then I used Windex and clean the glass overall it took a very long time to do this it was slow hot and tedious but in the end that's the only way we could get the plastic film off. I done this sections at a time sometimes it would pull off all in one strip other times it would not I recommend wearing heat resistant gloves They are a must so you don't get any burns and start far off from the window frame and slowly come in closer. One problem we did encounter is that because it was cold outside and you're putting heat on it we cracked one of the windows. So make sure the sun is out and shining to already warm up the window so you don't do this. And then slowly just take your time find something to sit down on and get a ladder slowly heat up sections at a time and then grab a corner to pull and slowly pull as you heat any remaining film residue scrub off with a metal scrubber. As you do the window plastic will fill up the metal scorch pad so shake it out in between or replace often with new ones ( as we had hundreds of windows to do We used hundreds of metal scrubber pads . I also used a puddy knife to start the edge please be careful as the vinyl is hot the tool will cut into it very easily .
